Abstract

646,515. Supply systems for space discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 25, 1948, No. 5644. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1947. [Class 38 (iv)] A circuit arrangement for a pair of discharge devices such as fluorescent lamps 1, 1<SP>1</SP> operating from lead and lag circuits, and in which the heating current supplied to the filamentary electrodes 3-6 is automatically reduced whilst the lamps are operating comprises a highreactance transformer 12 having a single primary winding 15, a pair of secondary windings 13, 14 connected respectively to the lamps direct and through a power factor correcting condenser 17, and three windings such as windings 18, 22, 26 for each filamentary electrode coupled respectively with the primary and two secondary windings and series-connected such that the winding 26 coupled with the secondary winding 14 bucks the voltages induced in the other two windings 18, 22. During preheating the voltages induced in windings 18, 22, 26 are respectively in phase and phase opposition resulting in a normal voltage applied across electrode 3. Whilst the lamps are operating the voltages induced in the respective windings 18, 22, 26 are displaced due to the phase displacements of the currents in the primary and secondary windings resulting in a reduced voltage applied to the electrode. An auxiliary electrode may be provided to assist starting and comprise an external strip 7, 7<SP>1</SP> extending along lamp envelope, such as a metallic paint, connected to one of the filamentary electrodes through a high impedance 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, such as is described in Specification 647,778, [Group XL (a)]. The transformer may be of the kind described in Specification 22527/47 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91).
