Abstract

828,750. Supply circuits for space-discharge lamps. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 3, 1958 [Oct. 24, 1957], No. 33278/57. Class 38 (4). An operating circuit for two or more discharge lamps 16, 16<SP>1</SP> in parallel comprises a lamp electrode heating transformer 10, the primary winding of which is connected across the supply terminals 12, 13 in series with a capacitor 11 for power factor improvement, each lamp having a serially connected ballast choke 17 or 17<SP>1</SP> whilst secondary windings 14, 15 of the transformer 10 are connected to the filamentary electrodes of the lamp 16 and the secondary winding 19 connected to one of the filamentary electrodes of lamp 16<SP>1</SP> the other filamentary electrode of which is connected in series with the discharge path of lamp 16. Thus the lamps operate sequentially and when both lamps 16, 16<SP>1</SP> are started the primary winding of transformer 10 carries two currents, phase displaced by a considerable angle, thus reducing the electrode heating currents. The circuit may be modified to include more than two lamps, the reduction in electrode heating current taking place after the last lamp has started.
