Abstract

574,980. Supply systems for space discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRIEDLANDER, E. Jan. 7, 1944. No. 331. [Class 38 (iv)] Inductive control.-The control for an electric discharge lamp 14 comprises a constant voltage transformer comprising a tapped air-gap reactor and a saturated iron-core reactor designed as the stabilizing impedance for the lamp. Fig. 3 represents one embodiment in which the transformer comprises an air-gap reactor. 1, wound on leg 15 of a laminated core having a middle leg 17 and air-gaps 16 and a saturated reactor 8 on ieg 18 of the core. A condenser 9 is connected across winding to improve the power factor A circuit or circuits each comprising a small reactor in series with a condenser 9 may be made to resonate at desired harmonic frequencies. The transformer can be designed so that a second harmonic produces high peaky voltages on open-circuit to ignite the lamp. Other arrangements are described.
