Abstract

582,607. Transformers. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. July 17, 1944, No. 13653. Convention date, May 5, 1943. [Class 38 (ii)] A transformer having a variable output voltage is provided with an additional winding tightly coupled to one of the transformer windings and connected in parallel with the other winding in order to reduce the leakage reactance. The variable output voltage may be obtained by means of a sliding contact or tappings on the output winding. Figs. 1 and 2 show two arrangements of a transformer having a sliding contact on the secondary winding. In Fig. 1, the input terminals 15, 16 are connected to the primary and secondary windings 13, 14 which are joined in series, the output terminals 18, 19 being joined to a sliding contact 17 and to the point of interconnection between the windings 13, 14 respectively. The leakage reactance between windings 13, 14 is reduced by means of an additional winding 20 tightly coupled to the winding 13 and connected in parallel with the winding 14. The number of turns in the winding 20 is adjusted so that under no-load conditions the voltage induced in this winding is equal to the voltage across the winding 14. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the additional winding 40 shunted across the secondary winding 33 is wound over the primary winding 31 which is not connected to the secondary winding.
