Abstract

966,425. Supply systems for discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 25, 1963 [June 28, 1962], No. 24862/62. Heading H2H. To reduce the size of an auto-connected strayfield transformer which supplies a discharge lamp 3, a power factor correction capacitor 8 is connected across the primary winding 6 and part of the secondary winding 7, the position of the tapping on this winding being found by experiment. In the circuit of Fig. 1, the voltages across windings 6, 7 are approximately equal when members 3, 8 are not connected, and the capacitor value and the tapping point are chosen so that when capacitor 8 is connected the overall open-circuit voltage across the windings 6, 7 is increased by about a quarter of the voltage across either winding to a value about twice the supply voltage. To produce an open circuit voltage lower or greater than that of the circuit of Fig. 1, the end of winding 7 is connected to a tapping on winding 6, Fig. 2 (not shown) or supply terminal 2 is connected to a tapping on winding 6, Fig. 3 (not shown), equality of winding voltage in the case of the former modification being determined for the winding 7 and that part of the winding 6 in the secondary (lamp) circuit. Heating windings may be provided at the ends of windings 6, 7 should the lamp have heatable electrodes, Fig. 4 (not shown). Typical design values are given for the stray-field transformer which may supply two or more series-connected lamps.
