Abstract
805,924. Supply systems for space-discharge devices. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 9, 1955 [Dec. 9, 1954], No. 35441/55. Class 38 (4). In a circuit arrangement for starting and operating from an A.C. supply two electric discharge lamps 1, 2, there is provided a ballast transformer 7 comprising a magnetic core 14 carrying a primary coil 8 connectable to the supply and two serially connected high voltage reactance secondary coils 12, 13 across which is connected a series combination containing one lamp 1 only and a capacitor 17, while the other lamp 2 is connected across a further series combination of the primary coil 8 and one 12 of the secondary coils : the open circuit voltages across the secondary coils 12, 13 are mutually additive and the total secondary voltage magnitude is sufficient to start the one lamp 1 while the voltage magnitude of the further series combination 8, 12 once lamp 1 is operating is sufficient to start the other lamp 2. The secondary coil 13 limits the current flow during operation and in the embodiment shown there is provided a third secondary coil 11 which is tightly magnetically coupled to the primary coil 8, forms part of both series combinations, and whose open circuit voltage is subtractive from those of the other secondary coils 12, 13.
