Abstract

1,235,496. Inductors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 24 Sept., 1969 [2 July, 1968], No. 31565/68. Heading H1T. [Also in Division H2] An inductor for use as a ballast unit in an electric gas discharge lamp system comprises at least two windings which are serially connected in opposition, the inductor being arranged to have large magnetic leakage. In one embodiment an inductor 11 is provided with three windings W1, W2, S, the windings W1, W2 being wound on a single former. The magnetic core 14 comprises two sections 12, 13 arranged to have air gaps between the sections with the windings W, S associated with a leg of each section. In a second embodiment the core sections 12, 13 are placed between the end portions of a rectangular type core. In other embodiments two windings only are used, magnetic shunts being provided between the two windings. The inductor may be potted in a mixture of polyester and powdered silica and housed in a box-like container associated with the discharge lamp.
