Abstract

991,918. Supply systems for space discharge apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 23, 1961 [May 25, 1960], No. 18563/61. Heading H2H. [Also in Division H1] A ballast inductor unit for a discharge lamp comprises a steel container 56, 57 (Fig. 2) enclosing a ballast inductor 5 having seriesconnected main windings 3, 4 (Figs. 1, 2) and series-connected auxiliary windings 8, 9 wound on a laminated core 51 which has an air gap 51 and four laminated yoke parts 52-55 which may be spot-welded to the container. In operation in the circuit of Fig. 1, the pre-ignition currents in the main and auxiliary windings respectively are in opposite sense so that winding portions 4 and 8 substantially neutralize each other in the no-load condition. In the ignited condition of the lamp the inductor windings operate as a stabilizing impedance and a capacitor 10 improves the power factor while the auxiliary windings 8, 9 prevent the capacitor discharging directly across the lamp.
