A circuit arrangement for operating a plurality of gas discharge lamps-as shown three 3a, 3b, 3c-wherein each lamp has two thermionic electrodes comprises an inductor having two windings 4, 7, the two windings 4, 7, the electrodes 6, 9 and a capacity 8 forming a series circuit across an A.C. supply 1, 2; the discharge path of the lamps forming a shunt to the winding 7 and the capacitor 8 and being in series with the winding 4; the electrodes 14-17 which are not included in the series circuit being supplied by secondary windings 10, 13 of two transformers of which the windings 4, 7 form the primaries, the secondary windings being in series connected pairs 10, 13 and 11, 12 whilst the electrodes 14, 15 and 16, 17 may be in series of parallel connected pairs; the arrangement being such that the voltage applied to the electrodes is greater before ignition of the lamps than after ignition. The transformers have a common magnetic core 5 and the inductor windings are connected in series-opposition whilst the pairs of secondary windings 10, 13 and 11, 12 are series-aiding.
