Abstract

1,086,186. Supply systems for fluorescent lamps. ADVANCE ELECTRONICS Ltd. March 18, 1966 [March 18, 1965], No. 11530/65. Heading H2H. A supply system for an electric discharge lamp 16 comprises a transformer 10 having a magnetic shunt between the primary and secondary windings 11, 14, a capacitor 17 being connected in series with the lamp and a saturable reactor 18 in parallel with the capacitor 17 and lamp 16. The primary and secondary windings 11, 14 may be connected in a series aiding manner as shown or the winding may be electrically separate with the secondary winding 14 only connected to the lamp circuit. The transformer 10 and the capacitor 17 are designed to operate in a ferro-resonant mode so that substantially constant voltage is applied to the lamp 16. The provision of the saturable reactor 18 modifies the current waveform of the lamp 18 to a generally square pattern thus enhancing the life of the lamp 16.
