Abstract

1,132,103. Ignition systems. ROTAX Ltd. Jan. 7, 1966 [Feb. 10, 1965], No. 5730/65. Heading F1B. An ignition system comprises in combination a capacitor 31, a plurality of parallel circuits connected across the capacitor each parallel circuit including a controlled breakdown device 33, 35 or 37 and a spark gap 34, 36 or 38, in series, means for charging the capacitor, a plurality of transformers 25-27 equal in number to the number of controlled breakdown devices, the secondary windings of the transformers being connected to the control electrodes of the controlled breakdown devices respectively so that when the primary winding of a transformer is energized a bias will be applied to the control electrode connected to the secondary winding of the energized transformer and switch means 12 operable selectively to energize the primary winding of one of the transformers, the arrangement being such that as the voltage across the capacitor increases the breakdown device having its control electrode connected to the secondary winding of the energized transformer will conduct to provide a discharge path for the capacitor. The controlled breakdown device may be a control gap or a conventional grid-control tube or a semi-conductor device. Thyratrons and thyristors are mentioned means not shown may be provided for limiting the voltage applied to the control electrode of the breakdown device.
