Abstract
1,076,679. Triggering arrangements for surge arresters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 12, 1965 [Dec. 11, 1964], No. 48038/65. Heading H2H. In a surge arrester and circuit arrangement generally similar to that of Specification 1,076,377, the arrester 16 is provided with a second trigger electrode 132 responsive to switching surges of relatively low frequency transmitted thereto by a step-up transformer 100, whose windings are arranged so that a voltage surge of one polarity produces a voltage of opposite polarity on the electrode 132. Thus, when spark-over to electrode 24 occurs, the instantaneous voltage between electrodes 22, 24 is the arithmetic sum of the surge and trigger electrode voltages, Fig. 4(a) (not shown), thereby assisting breakdown of the main gap 25. Capacitor 36 is chosen so that the other trigger electrode 32 responds to lightning surges, the operation for the clearance of such surges, of powerfollow current and of switching surges being similar to that described in the abovementioned Specification. In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the invention is applied to a surge arrester and circuit arrangement generally similar to that of Specification 1,026,021.
