Abstract
1,233,511. Lightning arresters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 15 April, 1969 [13 May, 1968], No. 19121/69. Heading H2H. A spark gap assembly, for use with either A.C. or D.C. systems, comprises a number of series-connected gaps, across some of which a trigger gap is connected. Using grading impedances and non-linear resistors, the assembly is designed to give a high ratio of reseal to sparkover voltage. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the main sparkgaps 7-11 are arranged in two groups A and B between a transmission line 1 and a grounded non-linear resistor 5. Across the group B, there is connected a trigger gap 20 and a coupling circuit 21. A pre-ionizer gap 25 is arranged close to the trigger gap. In operation, when a highvoltage surge occurs on the line 1, the impedance of a non-linear resistor 26 decreases, and the pre-ionizer gap 25 sparks over, supplying ionization for the gap 20, which subsequently sparks over itself if the surge voltage reaches a level approximately twice the normal line voltage. The sudden breakdown of the gap 20 causes the full surge voltage to be placed across the group A of main gaps which now break down successively. The full voltage now appears on capacitor 21a and is transmitted to the group B, all the gaps of which now spark over allowing the surge to discharge to earth through the resistor 5. At the same time, the trigger gap 20 is restored. When the surge has discharged, a follow current will pass through the assembly, but due to the presence of resistor 5 and to the action of coils 12 lengthening the arcs in the main horn gaps, a voltage builds up and the assembly is resealed. The reverse voltage is graded by impedances 14, 15 so that individual gaps do not restrike.
