Abstract
1,172,489. Surge diverters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 4 Nov., 1968 [13 Nov., 1967], No. 52171/68. Heading H2H. A lightning arrester of the multi-gap cascade type includes a trigger gap connected in parallel with one of the main gaps, and a preionizer in parallel with, and physically adjacent to, the trigger gap. In the embodiment shown, the arrester has five main gaps 1-5 shunted by linear resistors 10, 11 and non-linear resistors 12, 13. Preionizer gaps 21, 22 are connected across main gaps 1 and 3, and dielectric tubes 25 also act as corona-producing preionizers for gaps 2 and 4. In operation, when the overall voltage increases, the preionizer gaps 21, 22 are the first to break down, irradiating the main gap 3 and a trigger gap 29 whose width is adjustable by means of a screw (30), Fig. 2 (not shown). Preionizers 23, 24 also break down. The voltage across gaps 1 and 3 now increases due to the non-linear resistors 12, 13, leading to the break down first of gap 1 triggered by gap 29, and then of gap 3. Voltage now builds up across gaps 2 and 4 leading to sparkover. and then finally gap 1 sparks again and gap 5 breaks down. The whole cascade is controlled by the adjustment of the trigger gap 29, and the settings of the main gaps are not critical. The gap 5 is shunted by a magnet coil 9 which urges arcs in the gaps 1-5 out to the extremities of the electrodes. The gaps are arranged in superposed planes between insulating discs, Fig. 2 (not shown).
