Abstract

730,710. Lightning arresters. E.M.P. ELECTRIC, Ltd. Nov. 23, 1951, No. 6477/54. Divided out of 730,634. Class 38 (4). In a lightning arrester comprising a spark gap in series with a non-linear resistor, the latter comprises an insulating housing containing a plurality of resistance unit assemblies, each consisting of two or more discs of non-linear resistance material. The assemblies may be separated by buffer rings to retain the assemblies in correct position in the housing. The spark gap may be exterior of the housing, or may be within the latter. In the arrester shown in Fig. 2, a housing 42, containing several resistance unit assemblies 21 separated by buffer rings, also surrounds at its upper end a porcelain tube 41 which houses a gap unit G comprising electrode plates separated by shunt resistor rings 24. A buffer ring 38 centres the tube 41 within the housing 42.
