Abstract
1283516 Lightning arresters GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 18 Feb 1970 [24 Feb 1969] 7775/70 Heading H2H A lightning arrester comprises a spark gap assembly including a number of arc chambers each having a pair of arc-establishing electrodes 12, 12a, a coil 22 for lengthening and driving the arcs into arc cooling surfaces 30-33 in each chamber and an arc movement retarding wall 35 mounted in each chamber. As shown four chambers formed by adjacent pairs of insulating plates 2-7 house four pairs of electrodes, one electrode 12, 13, 14, 15 of each pair being illustrated in Fig. 1. Copper pins 16-21 connect the pairs of electrodes in series with the coil 22 and with a block 10 of non-linear resistive material via a conductive plate 9. A pre-ionizer 24 and a resistor 25 are connected across each pair of electrodes and the wall 35 may be moulded integrally with each lower insulating plate of each chamber or the wall may comprise electrically conductive material. The wall prevents the arc initially reaching surfaces 31, 32 until its current has been reduced. In a modification two separated walls are provided.
