Abstract

1298996 Lightning arresters GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 24 Feb 1970 [3 March 1969] 8805/70 Heading H2H A lightning arrester is similar to that described in Specification 1,283,516 but the coil 13 is shunted by a spark gap formed by electrodes 15, 16. Initially the over voltage surge arcs across the spark gap but as the voltage and current decline the arc is extinguished after a predetermined time dependent on the inductance of the coil and the current is diverted through the coil. The magnetic field generated by the current in the coil drives the arcs against the arc quenching walls of the chambers. The rate of decrease of current in the coil is retarded by the back e.m.f. generated in the coil. In a modification the electrodes 15, 16 are replaced by a block of non-linear resistive material positioned between a pair of terminal plates.
