Abstract

957,359. Surge diverters. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 21, 1963 [April 4, 1962], No. 12994/62. Heading H2H. A surge diverter generally similar to that of Specification 677,949 has radially-angularlydisposed electrodes 4, each of U-shape and connected by rivets 11 to respective metal plates 12, so that as the arc is elongated in the chamber 5 the arc roots move out along the U limbs remote from the rivets 11, thus causing the arc current to flow along a path of progressively increasing length in the electrodes 4 and thereby augment the electromagnetic blow-out effect of a coil 14. The chamber 5 decreases in cross-section towards its periphery to facilitate arc extinction and the arc gases are vented through channels 6, 7 to a space 8, the whole assembly being formed by combining two identically-recessed insulating discs 1 each carrying an electrode 4. The series-connected coil 14 is protected against excess voltage by a non-linear resistor 17 in parallel thereto and a second non-linear resistor 25 in parallel with the electrodes 4 provides for adjustment of voltage distribution when a number of the diverters are series-connected in an assembly. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the resistor 17 is annular and its central space contains a member of low remanence magnetic material to increase the magnetic field strength in the gap between electrodes 4. In another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the resistor 17 is replaced by a spark gap.
