Abstract

1,018,365. Gas blast switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 13,1964 [Aug. 16, 1963], No. 33017/64. Heading H2B. The circuit-breaker of Specification 987,295 is modified by associating with the upstream arcing electrode 70, Fig. 2 (not shown), a magnetic coil 80 in series with the electrode so as to create a radial field in the region 90 of stagnant gas close to the surface 86 of the electrode and so cause the arc root to move around the surface. The centre of the surface 86 is cut away at 87 and further openings 88 in the cylindrical shell 85 of the electrode provide a flow of gas therethrough so as to keep the arc root away from region of minimum radial field. Alternatively the centre opening 87 may be plugged by an insulating (e.g. P.T.F.E.) member 100. In a further modification the shell 85 is slotted at 107 and provided with an insert 105 of arc resistant material such as " Elkonite " (Registered Trade Mark), the remainder of the electrode being of copper.
