Abstract
912,624. Fusible cut-outs. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 4, 1960 [Nov. 6, 1959], No. 37713/59. Class 38 (1). A fuse element consists of a flat strip of a high melting-point metal, 1, such as silver, in which a trapezoidal slot, 2, is cut to divide a current into two paths, 3 and 4. A portion of path, 4, is removed and replaced by an insert, 5, of low-melting-point metal such as a tin alloy. Insert, 5, is surrounded by a close-fitting iron ring, 6, and offers a high impedance to a current surge, thereby causing a large current flow through path 3 which fuses, with the subsequent fusing of insert 5. Overload currents cause eddy-current heating of the ring 6, which, together with the direct heating effect of the overload currents, fuses insert 5, causing subsequent fusing of the path 3. Transient overloads will not fuse insert 5, the energy being absorbed in ring 6. Arcing on fusing may be reduced by suitably proportioning the two paths 3 and 4.
