Abstract

1483635 Current limiting devices BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 11 Nov 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 48674/74 Heading H1N [Also in in Division H2] A restorable current limiting device comprises, in a chamber 5, a fixed contact 1 and a moving contact 3, an electrodynamic actuating spring coil 4 which separates the contacts when a predetermined magnitude of current flows through them, and a piston 3a integral with the movable contact and arranged to move in response to an increase in gas pressure in the contact region of the chamber 5, due to an arc struck between the contacts, to assist in separating the contacts. The resistance of the arc between the contacts limits the current flowing through the contacts. The gas may be evolved from gas evolving material which is used for constructing or coating the housing or a sheath 5a insulating the fixed contact. Movement of the piston opens gas venting ports 8 in the wall of the chamber. The movable contact 3 is connected to an insulating tappet 9 which actuates or trips a circuit breaker connected in series with the current limiting device. An axial magnetic field generated in the spring coil 4 has a destabilizing effect on the arc and reduces contact burning. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, not shown, both contacts are movable and arranged in the same way as the movable contact in the first embodiment with associated spring coils and pistons in a symmetrical construction. Annular electrodes are associated with the moving contacts and serve as tracks for the arc, these electrodes having limited movement compared with the contacts and being used to uncover the venting ports when they are moved by gas pressure.
