Abstract

1,197,705. Automatic circuit - breakers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 7 Jan., 1969 [24 Jan., 1968], No. 955/69. Heading H1N. In a circuit-breaker having a movable contact structure 95 comprising a conducting arcing contact arm 96 and main contact arms 99 mounted for limited relative movement upon contact actuating movement of the structure 95, a U-shaped metal separating member 117 has legs 119 preventing the adjacent arms 99 from frictionally engaging the arcing contact arm 96 under the action of magnetic forces resulting from concurrent flow of current through the arcing and main contact arms in the same direction. Insulating spacers 125 separate the main contact arms 99 and cooperate with member 117. to define spaces accommodating the contact pressure springs 121, 123, of arms 99. A single operating mechanism 53 controls all three pole units of the circuit-breaker. During opening, main contacts 131, 33 open first, followed by arcing contacts 135, 29, then arcing contacts 135, 137, and lastly main contacts 133, 43. These features of the circuit-breaker are claimed in Specification 1,197,706. Separating member 117 may be of magnetic iron and attract an armature 167, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown), attached to arcing contact arm 96, to reinforce contact pressure and offset blow-off forces as the current increases towards a tripping valve. Specification 1,137,012 has many features disclosed in this Specification.
