Abstract
1383954 Arc-rupturing in switches; automatic circuit-breakers WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 15 March 1972 [19 April 1971] 12056/72 Heading H1N In a circuit-breaker having a pair of separable arcing contacts 24, 25 and separable main contacts 24b, 27, 28, an arc-chute comprises a plurality of substantially parallel spaced magnetic plates 104, 105, each of the plates having a major slot 106 surrounding the main as well as the arcing contacts and being defined by an inner edge of the plate extending in closely spaced relationship on three sides of the main and arcing contacts. Some of the plates may have minor slots 111a, 111b extending inwardly from corners of slot 106 to prevent arcs lingering at the corners. The circuit-breaker may be a multipole circuit-breaker having a single overcentre spring toggle mechanism 22 operated through linkage 19 by a handle 11 mounted on a cover 13. One end of the mechanism is supported by a pivoted support 65 which may be released from a latching lever 70 by energization of a solenoid indicated at 73 when it is desired to trip the circuit-breaker. Each pole of the circuit-breaker has a moving contact assembly comprising a pivoted contact holder 33 carrying a central spring-biased pivoted arcing, contact 25c and two spring-biased pivoted main contacts 27, 28 on each side of the arcing contact.
