A combination of an on-off control switch with a reversing switch, for mounting in a portable tool for example, is arranged so that the reversing switch is latched in each of its positions and can only be operated when the control switch is off. A retractive trigger 12 carries a sheet metal actuating member 18 coupled by an over-centre spring 78 to a yoke 80 pivoted at 81 and mechanically interconnecting two insulating plates 74, 74<SP>1</SP> which carry metal pieces 72, 72<SP>1</SP> for bridging contacts 69, 39 and 69<SP>1</SP>, 39<SP>1</SP> respectively, with a snapaction. The reversing switch comprises a slidable thumb-piece 56 carrying two spring- loaded balls 40, 41 which respectively interconnect terminal strips 20, 201 with crossedover strips 32, 32<SP>1</SP> continuous with switch contacts 39, 39<SP>1</SP>. A hump 46 of insulation is seated on the cross-over point of strips 32, 32<SP>1</SP>. Secured to thumb-piece 56 is a springy strip 90 having ears 94 which latch in recesses 16a or 16b in a cover 16 and prevent operation of the thumb-piece. A finger 18i is provided on the actuating member 18 of the control switch and in the off position of this switch (Fig. 5, not shown), the finger 18i lifts the strip 90 such that ears 94 rise above the cover 16 and the thumb-piece 56 is free to be moved.
