Abstract

718,984. Thermal switches; switches held set and freed mechanically. SQUARE D CO. March 11, 1952 [March 24, 1951], No. 6271/52. Class 38(5) The movable contact 9 of a switch is carried by an arm having a rigid portion 7 and a flexible portion 8 and carried by a bimetal strip 6 secured to a terminal 3. The strip 6 and arm 7 are inherently biased to hold contact 9 in engagement with a fixed contact 11. The arm 7 is embraced by the arms of a U-shaped resilient member 23, the position of the arms of which is adjustable by a screw 29 engaging a member 28 bearing on the convex bight of member 23. The contacts are manually opened by moving the dolly 18 counterclockwise from the Fig. 1 position to cause a cam 17 thereon to depress an armature 16 carried by the bimetal. Contact separation is delayed by projections 25 on the arms of member 23 until the flexible portion 8 becomes sufficiently stressed to overcome the pressure of arms 23, when the contacts snap open, the arms 23 restoring to hold the contacts open. Reverse movement of the dolly pushes a cam 22 between the ends 24 of the arms and releases the arm 7 which snaps to its closed position. The contacts are also automatically opened on a moderate prolonged overload by downward deflection of the bimetal strip 6 and on severe overload by the attraction of armature 16 by a magnetic flux in a member 27, of which member 28 forms part. In either case, the contacts are reclosed by hand. The member 23 is embraced by an ambient temperature compensating bimetal 26.
