778,952. Automatic circuit-breakers; snapaction switches. FEDERAL PACIFIC ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 30, 1954 [Dec. 11, 1953; Dec. 11, 1953; Dec. 11, 1953; Dec. 11, 1953], No. 34706/54. Class 38(5) In order to prevent arcing and welding of the contacts 20, 22 on closing of a manually-operated circuit-breaker, the movement of the contact 20 is temporarily obstructed during the turning of the handle 28, the obstruction being removed shortly before the handle completes its closing stroke so that the contacts snap closed independently of movement of the handle. The obstruction is formed by a member 56 located by a tongue 63 and supported on a movable contact-carrying member 18 pivoted on a helical spring 48, a compression spring 42 being positioned between handle 28 and member 56. As handle 28 is turned from contact open position (Fig. 1) it first drives link 30 to pivot lever 26 into engagement with an overload bimetal 32 and then causes member 18, lever 26, and the bimetal to move as a whole about pivot 48 in the closing direction. The spring 42 presses arm 60 of member 56 so that it travels along a cam surface 68 in the casing until its end engages shoulder 70 thus arresting movement of contact 20. At about dead-centre position of toggle 28, 30 pivot 48 has been slightly shifted and deformed and portion 76 of arm 18 engages the end of a slot in member 56, arm 75 on handle 28 then pushes arm 62 to remove arm 60 from shoulder 70 so allowing contact 20 to snap closed under influence of spring 48. On manual opening of the breaker, arm 77 on handle 28 engages arm 62 of member 56 to aid spring 42 in driving the contacts apart. The bimetal 32 is connected to terminal 34 and carries the breaker current, the downward flexing of the bimetal in case of overload being aided by magnetization of armature 38 by the bimetal current.
