Abstract
1,167,057. Automatic circuit - breakers; vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 16 May, 1967 [16 June, 1966], No. 22643/67. Heading H1N. A circuit-breaker has a rigid movable conductor 20 connected to a moving contact 12 and a rigid movable member 40 for developing a magnetic closing force on the conductor which varies in dependence on the square of the current through the contacts 11, 12. In the arrangement shown, the rotation of a cam 70 straightens a toggle 52, 54 and moves the magnetic member 40 upwards until it engages and releases a latch 28. A spring 24 now causes the anticlockwise motion of the conductor 20 to close the contacts 11, 12. As the contacts close, current flowing through the conductor 20 creates a flux through the member 40 which then provides a closing force acting on the conductor 20. The circuit-breaker may be tripped open under overload conditions on the energization of an electromagnet 64 to release a latch 62. The circuit-breaker is opened by a spring 48 which moves the member 40 until it strikes and then moves the conductor 20. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), the member 40 is replaced by a further conductor connected in series with, and arranged below, the conductor 20. The current flows in opposite directions in the two conductors so that the force of repulsion between them provides a closing force. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the latch 28 and the spring 24 are replaced by an overcentre spring toggle. The contact assembly may be provided by a vacuum switch as shown.
