Abstract

1,231,165. Electrically released switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 2 Feb., 1970 [26 Feb., 1969], No. 4798/70. Heading H1N. A tripping device for a circuit breaker comprises a magnetic frame 155 attached to a non- magnetic base 149; a cylindrical armature 165 carried by a non-magnetic rod 169 biased to a tripping position by a spring 179; permanent magnets 203, 205 acting to maintain the armature 165 in the non-tripping position shown; an electromagnetic coil 201 for overcoming the permanent magnets to release the armature to the tripping position; and a resetting device 187 coupled to one end of the rod 169 and engageable by the operating mechanism of the circuit breaker to reset the armature 165 during contact-opening operation of the mechanism. The circuit breaker is of the kind having an overcentre spring toggle operating mechanism (Fig. 2, not shown) in the middle of three poles. A single tripping device 16 is mounted in one of the other poles, being mounted upon a casing 113 and acting on a common trip bar 119 therein. An extension 225 of one contact carrying arm 31 acts on the resetting lever 187, which is coupled to the rod 161 by a spring 183, as the contacts open. The device is operated by a D.C. pulse applied to the coil 201 by a semiconductor device (not shown) responsive to an overload or earth fault determined by three current transformers in the three phases of the protected circuit.
