Abstract

1354301 Protective arrangements RUCKER CO 10 May 1971 [11 May 1970] 13924/71 Heading H2K [Also in Division H1] An overcurrent-responsive moulded-case circuit-breaker for use in a "panelboard" is provided with an earth-leakage protective device which comprises a core-balance transformer 46, a static protective circuit 62 and an electromagnetic tripping device 56. The circuitbreaker is of the kind having a tension spring over-centre operating mechanism 18, 38, 23 with a latch member 36. This member is normally latched by the armature 32 of an electromagnetic and bimetallic overcurrent tripping device 27, 28. The earth-leakage tripping device 56 has a rectilinearly movable armature 57 carrying a hook 61 which engages and moves the armature 32 when the coil 58 of the device 56 is energized. A test switch 106 with a resistor (not shown) is provided to unbalance the currents through the transformer 46 to test the operation of the circuit-breaker. A mechanical indicator or a lamp 168 is provided to show when tripping occurs in response to earth leakage, the lamp being supplied from the supply conductors through a full wave rectifier (Fig. 9, not shown), under the control of a silicon-controlled rectifier which may be turned off by a reset switch which may be linked mechanically with the main circuit-breaker contacts. Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) illustrate a switchboard having the above circuit-breakers mounted by terminals 42 and mounting cams 146 on bus-bars and slotted rail members respectively. The static circuit 62 may be that of either Specification 1,334,169 or Specification 1,352,183. A further circuit, Fig. 10 (not shown), includes a coupling transformer to induce a signal from an oscillator into the conductors to produce tripping should the earthed neutral conductor develop an earth fault on the load side of the core-balance transformer or should the line conductor become shorted to itself on both sides of the corebalance transformer or to an unprotected conductor.
