Abstract

1454354 Circuit breaker trip actuator WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 28 Jan 1974 [30 Jan 1973] 03813/74 Heading H1N A magnetic actuator, for tripping a circuit breaker, comprises a V-shaped magnetic frame 133 within which a magnetic tubular armature 101, is supported on a non-magnetic pin 145 so that it can slide axially. The frame also supports a coil 157 and permanent magnets 171 and 173 and a plate 137 joins the free ends of the limbs 135. The armature is shaped to form a collar 163 and then narrows to project through an opening 169 in the plate 137 and has a projection 103 for striking the circuit breaker latching device. In the inoperative condition the armature is held back abutting a pole piece 149 against the force of a spring 165, by means of the flux from permanent magnets 171 and 173 passing through the pole piece 149. When the coil 157 is energised, it increases the reluctance of the path through the pole piece 149 thus enabling the spring to overcome the magnetic holding force and move the armature axially so that the projection 103 strikes a latch tripping device, such as that forming the subject of copending application 3819/74. At the same time the flux transfers to a path via the plate 137 so that it is assisting the spring bias. The armature is subsequently restored to its initial position by manual operation of the circuit-breaker handle which moves the latch tripping device to push against the projection 103. The incorporation of the actuator in a known type of circuit breaker, having an insulating housing internally divided into three adjacent pole units and linked to operate together by means of a single overcentre toggle operating mechanism is described (Fig. 1, not shown).
