Abstract

1412705 Overload circuit breaker WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 3 Dec 1973 [1 Dec 1972] 55909/73 Heading H1N A circuit interrupter has at least one pole unit in which contact separation is achieved by locating a contact arm in the entrance of a slot in a magnetic drive unit, comprising a core of magnetic material, in such a way that a predetermined overload current passing through the contact arm produces a flux in the magnetic core which causes the contact arm to be driven into the slot, thus separating the contacts. A three-pole circuit breaker comprises two series-connected units, the first being a storedenergy type circuit breaker 7 which is the subject-matter of Specification 1,263,819. This breaker trips at a first level of overload current by action of a bimetallic strip 51 and at a second level of overload by magnetic attraction of an armature 55, movement of either of these causing release of the latching mechanism 21. The second unit is the magnetic-drive interrupter of the invention 9, comprising three identical pole units 77 in each of which the magnetic-drive consists of a laminated U-shaped core 133 with a slot 137 the inner end of which is tapered so that a contact arm 93, lying in the mouth of the slot, can pivot into it when attracted by the magnetic flux (indicated by the arrowed circulation lies in Fig. 3) which results from current flowing through the contact arm. The contact arm 93 carries a moving contact 91 co-operating with fixed contact 83; it is mounted on a pivot 95 and has a latch extension 97 which engages in a latch 99 when the contact arm is in the fully open position against the abutment 146. The attractive force of the magnetic drive is resisted by a spring 101 which is overcome when the overload current reaches a third predetermined value higher than either of those at which operation of the thermal or magnetic actuating devices of the series circuit-breaker 7 is initiated. Arcing plates 145 and a re-set button 111 are provided. In a modification (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) the fixed contact is replaced by a second moving contact carried on a second contact arm disposed in the mouth of a second magnetic-drive unit the two assemblies being in mirror-image arrangement and the two contact arms being linked by gearing at their pivots to ensure simultaneous operation. In a further modification (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) the slot in the magnetic core is widened at its inner end to become T-shaped and the flexible conductor between the incoming terminal and the contact arm is wound around the yoke portion of the core, the turns being accommodated in the widened portion of the slot.
