Automatic circuitbreakers; sparking, preventing. - In a circuit-breaker, the interaction of the currents in the movable and fixed parts tends to separate them and to blow out the spark between the contacts, which are constructed as arcing horns. A single-break form is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1 and a doublebreak in Fig. 3. A partial magnetic circuit of iron may be arranged outside and adjacent to the loop formed by the fixed and movable current carrying members to augment the blow-out action. In the circuit-breaker shown in Fig. 4, the fixed contact is constituted by the turned-up end b of a strap conductor, which is bent into one or more coils wound round a three-sided core k. The movable conductor, pivoted at o and bent at its contact end to form a contact horn, is normally retained in the closed position by a spring-controlled magnetic latch q which is withdrawn on overload by the core u magnetized by the current in arc of the conductors. When released the contact arm is moved to the off position by the reaction between the coils, and the arc is blown out at the horns by the field produced by the loop and by the coils.
