Abstract

711,726. Arc-rupturing in switches; electromagnetic switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 9, 1952 [June 23, 1951], No. 14456/52. Class 38(5) An electromagnetic switch has a contact 10 movable intermittently between two fixed contacts 11, 12, the arcs formed between the contacts being blown out by permanent magnets 16, 17 arranged outside the contacts with their poles so arranged that the flux produced passes across the face of the fixed contacts in opposite directions in order that both arcs may be blown upwards. Contact 10 is carried by an arm 7 pivoted at 8 and carrying an armature 6 co-operating with coils 4, 5, a spring 9 biasing the arm 7 counter-clockwise. The contacts may be arranged in an arc chute with slotted plates, Figs. 3-5 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 8, two horse-shoe magnets 316, 317, embracing the fixed contacts 311, 312 are used.
