Abstract

804,660. Arc rupturing in switches. I-T-E CIRCUIT BREAKERS CO. Nov. 9, 1956 [Nov. 9, 1955], No. 34359/56. Class 38 (5). A circuit-breaker has an arc-chute with slotted or notched arc plates 37 and a magnetic blow-out arrangement comprising a closed magnetic core 24 with two blow-out coils 22, 23 wound to create oppositely directed fluxes in the core so as to provide a uniform magnetic field across the region enclosed by the core. The coils 22, 23 are connected in series between the fixed contact structure 16, 17 and an arcing horn 20. When an arc is drawn between the arcing contacts 17, 18 it is extended on to the horn 20 and the portion of the arc between the contact 17 and are horn 20 is extinguished by a " jump gap " 19 to connect the coils 22, 23 in series with the arc. The core may be horizontally laminated as indicated in Fig. 3. Reference is made to A.I.E.E. Transactions, Part 3, Dec. 1955, page 1062. Specification 797,412 is referred to.
