Abstract

656,644. Arc-rupturing in switches. AKT.- GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE, and WROBLEWSKY, B. March 18, 1948, No. 8097. Addition to 650,039. (Class 38(v)] The switch of the parent Specification which has a pair of fixed contacts with arc horns and an intermediate electrode having a pair of arc horns so as to provide two pairs of divergent arc horns in adjacent parallel planes, is modified by the connection of an auxiliary blow-out coil between the horns of the intermediate electrode. In the figure, main blow-out coils i<SP>1</SP>, i<SP>2</SP> are connected in series with fixed contacts a<SP>1</SP>, a<SP>2</SP> which have arc horns c<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>2</SP>. The arc horn c<SP>1</SP> is in the same plane as the intermediate arc horn g 1 and the arc horn c, in in the parallel plane containing the intermediate arc horn g<SP>1</SP> and the arc horn c' in the arc horn g<SP>2</SP>. The arc horns g<SP>1</SP>, g<SP>2</SP> are interconnected by the auxiliary blow-out coil n When the switch is opened, arcs 1 are initially drawn between the moving contact h and the fixed contacts a<SP>1</SP>, a<SP>2</SP> and are blown by the main blow-out field onto the horns g<SP>1</SP>, g<SP>2</SP> as indicated at II. The auxiliary blowout coil n is now connected in series with the arcs and the strengthened blow-out field extends the arcs between horns c<SP>1</SP>, g<SP>2</SP> and c<SP>2</SP>, g<SP>2</SP> as indicated at III until extinction occurs. The horns, for the sake of clarity are shown in horizontal positions, but would in fact diverge as shown in the parent Specification.
