Abstract

584,718. Air-break switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and AMER, D. F. Jan. 24, 1945, No. 1882. [Class 38 (v)] In an A.C. circuitbreaker, in which a gas blast flows through a nozzle D to assist in extinguishing the arc between the main arcing contacts C, B<2>, and in which any restriking of the arc takes place between one of the main arcing contacts and an auxiliary electrode connected to the other main arcing contact through a limiting resistanc R, the nozzle itself forms the auxiliary electrode. To open the breaker, gas is admitted to move contact E to the left, thus drawing an arc between contacts E, C, which is transferred from contact E to the nozzle D and then blown on to the contact B<2> so as to lie axially of the nozzle, and extinguished at current zero. If the arc restrikes, it will form between contact B<2> and the nozzle D in series with the resistance R, whereby it is readily extinguished. The contact E may alternatively be insulated from the nozzle D, which may be the form described in Specification 580,672.
