Abstract
582,835. Gas-blast switches. AKT.-GES., BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. Sept. 11, 1944, No. 17319. Convention date, Sept. 11, 1943. [Class 38 (v)] In a multi-break gas-blast circuit-breaker with control of voltage distribution over the points of interruption by means of parallel impedances, the impedances are connected in parallel by separate switches or spark gaps. The interrupting points a<1> &c. are carried in insulators d' &c. having metallic end pieces k<1> &c. The control resistances g' &c. with their switching means are located in insulators i<1> &c. between the end pieces k' &c. When pressure gas is supplied from the cylinder f, the movable spring- closed contacts a<1> &c. are opened, the arcs being blown out through baffles n', n<2>. Some of the gas passes to insulators i' &c. and opens contacts c' &c. the gases escaping through baffle n<4>. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the exhaust gases from the resistance switches escape through the baffles n', n<2>. In Fig. 5, the switches are replaced by spark gaps p<1>-p<3> with pin electrodes, or a pin electrode and hollow electrode as shown, or alternatively the electrodes may be at each side of an insulating nozzle. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (hot shown), the exhaust gases from switches a<1> &c. are passed over the spark gaps p<1> &c. In Fig. 7 (not shown), the resistances are fixed one above the other on an insulating tube, the spark gaps being inside the tube, and gas passes down the inside of the tube and escapes round the outside, thereby cooling the resistances. If the series disconnecting switch b of Fig. 3 is omitted, the pressure in the insulator must be maintained after the arcs are extinguished. The resistances may be dimensioned to control over-voltages, and those of several points of interruption may be combined to form one disconnectable group, Fig. 2 (not shown).
