Abstract
766,655. Arc-rupturing in switches. ETABLISSEMENTS MERLIN & GERIN SOC. ANON. Dec. 18, 1953 [Dec. 22, 1952; Feb. 13, 1953], No. 35321/53. Class 38(5) In a circuit-breaker comprising a switch blade 9 with an auxiliary blade 10 pivoted thereto, the blade 10 moves in an arcextinguishing chamber 13 detachably secured to the breaker. The chamber comprises a pair of spaced, insulating plates 14, Fig. 3, between which are ceramic plates 15. A comb-shaped element 16 having teeth of different lengths is located between plates 15, the inner ends of the teeth projecting above the edges of the plates to form spaces 17 for the escape of arc gases. Blow-out coils 18, 19 wound for extinguishing light and heavy current arcs respectively and connected to auxiliary electrodes 25, 24 are provided in the chamber. On opening of the breaker, the blade 10 leaves an auxiliary contact 22 after blade 9 has left the main contact 8, and as blade 10 passes electrode 24 one root. of the arc passes to it from contact 22 and connects coil 19 in series with the arc. The blade then passes electrode 25 whilst the arc is blown towards comb 16 by coil 19. When the blade reaches a further auxiliary contact 23 the arc, if still in existence, passes to electrode 25 and coil 18 is connected in series with the arc and coil 19, the combined effect of the coils then blowing the arc against comb 16. Blow-out cheeks 20, 21 are provided externally of the chamber and are preferably sheathed with insulating material. Fig. 7 shows a modification of the chamber wherein the blow-out cheeks are divided into sections 20a, 20b, 21a, 21b to distribute the potential gradient between the cheeks. Counter-cheeks 30 ... 32 are provided and all the cheeks are sheathed in insulation.
