Abstract

687,897. Heavy-current switches; arc rupturing. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 15, 1951 [Jan. 25, 1950], No. 1080/51. Class 38 (v) An air-break switch has an arc muffler comprising a plurality of magnetic members 31 each having a central zigzag corrugation 32 and parallel end pieces 33, 34 which extend beyond the corrugations to form mounting lugs 35 engaging slots 38 in insulating side barriers 36, 37, the barriers supporting the members 31 in nested spaced-apart relation to form a multiple path labyrinth. The muffler is used in a switch in conjunction with an arc-quenching chamber such as that of Specification 687,886, and serves to provide a plurality of heat-absorbing zigzag passages for the hot arc gases, any incandescent particles in the gases being thrown against and deposited on the members 31. In addition, the members 31 are magnetised by the current in the arc or arcs and provide magnetic attraction to elongate the arc or arcs. The members 31 may be arranged in groups by omitting members 31 at intervals, insulating pins 40 being interposed in the resulting spaces. Specifications 564,050 and 589,270 also are referred to.
