Abstract

The switch has fixed (3) and moving (4) contacts between two insulating plates (5,6) with a magnet (9) behind one plate (5). When arcing (7) occurs, the arcing gases travel away from the moving contact end, and enter an arc extinction chamber formed by a stack of ferromagnetic plates (2). These are shaped to form a funnel shaped channel for the gases, and also have slots across them, near the wider end of the channel, holding comb shaped insulating strips (8), one each side of the channel. The strips slope towards the gas entry direction, and the fingers (8a) of the combs are in line with the gaps between the stacked plates. The insulating plate (5) for the magnet has a flange (5a) near the channel end, retaining the magnet, and its inner surface varies in thickness due to a stepped construction (5b,5c).
