Abstract

853,162. Arc-rupturing in switches. TELEMECANIQUE ELECTRIQUE. June 16, 1958 [July 3, 1957], No. 19255/58. Class 38 (5). In a switch in which a pair of opposed flat contacts 1a, 2a separate in a direction generally normal to their plane of contact, an angled magnetic member 5 is arranged adjacent to them, causing the arc to deflect towards and be quenched on the flange parallel to conductors 1, 2. The contacts may have the same width as the conductors (Fig. 3, not shown), but the quenching effect can be assisted by displacing them towards this flange, their near edges protruding beyond conductors 1, 2, if desired (Fig. 5a) and their far edges being bevelled at 6. The bridging contact arrangement of Fig. 6 has its contacts and flanges oppositely disposed to allow rotation of member 9 through 180 degrees, but the contacts and flanges may alternatively be disposed on the same sides of conductors 11, 12 (Fig. 6a, not shown).
