Abstract

1,056,902. Vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 18, 1965 [March 16, 1964], No. 6985/65. Heading H2B. The contact members of a vacuum switch each comprise a hollow copper cylinder 25 having raised weldresistant contact surfaces 30, 31 at one end and mounted, at the other end, on a copper. disc 34, attached to a conducting rod 18a. by means of high resistance stainless steel pins 42 and a single, large, low resistance copper member 40, the cylinder 25 being slotted at 28 at an angle such that the current through the contact to an arc 32 rooting anywhere on the arc running surface 26 of the contact is forced to follow a path L to the member 40 which has a component circumferentially of the cylinder. Since the path L to an arc rooting just to the left of slot 28 passes through a full 360 degrees, the magnetic field created and therefore the circumferential force on the arc is greatest just before it jumps the gap. To produce a more constant force the mating contact (Fig. 1, not shown) is displaced through 180 degrees. In a simplified form of the invention (Fig. 5, not shown) only one contact is provided with the slotted cylinder. To further increase the proportion of the current flowing through the member 40, slots 50 (Fig. 6, not shown) can be cut in the cylinder adjacent to the pins 42.
