Abstract
1,110,297. Vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 11 Nov., 1965 [16 Nov., 1964], No. 47869/65. Heading H1N. To limit the arc voltage, a vacuum switch has a pair of electrodes 17, 18 shaped to provide plurality of gaps 30 in which parallel connected arcs 32 ... 35 form. The arcs extend in directions generally parallel to the magnetic field 45 resulting from the current flowing through the switch, and the adjacent arcs produce magnetic fields which are substantially self-cancelling so that the magnetic field component acting perpendicularly to any arc is small. In the arrangement shown the upper electrode 17 is fixed and has two extensions 26 which are interposed between similar extensions 26a from the lower electrode 18 which is movable rectilinearly along its axis. The electrodes are of copper and the electrode 18 has tips 42 of copper-bismuth alloy which co-operate with a face 43 of the electrode 17. The tips 42 and face 43 constitute the separable contacts of the switch at which the arcs are initially drawn. Each electrode may have more than two extensions, Fig. 8 (not shown), and the lower electrode may be pivoted so that contact is directly made and broken between some of the extensions 26, 26a, Fig. 7 (not shown). In a further arrangement, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), both electrodes are fixed and a pair of co-operating contacts is disposed in the central space between the electrode extensions 26, 26a.
