Abstract
1,272,704. Gas blast circuit breakers. MERLIN GERIN. 17 July, 1970 [12 Aug., 1969], No. 34708/70. Heading H1N. In a gas blast circuit breaker, especially of the puffer type using SF6, arcing contacts 26, 36 move within an orifice 22, a part 50 of which is conductive and electrically connected to the contact 36, and to which part the arc formed during the opening operation transfers from contact 36. In Fig. 2 the orifice 22 comprises a part 50 of conductive material having a restricted part 38, and an insulating part 52; the orifice, the resiliently mounted arcing contact 26 and the main contact 44 being mounted on a piston 18 movable within cylinder 10. The part 50 is connected to contact 36 via slides 46 and the tubular main contact 40. An arc drawn between the arcing contacts is transferred from contact 36 to the throat 38 of the orifice and is then extinguished, by the gas blast through orifices 24 in the piston 18. The resistance of the arc path may be increased by making part 50 of resistive material, or by providing an external resistance, e.g. a wound resistance in tube 40. The slides 46 may be mounted on the part 50 and engage a further tubular contact instead of the main tubular contact, Fig. 3 (not shown). The orifice and contact member 26 may be fixed and the contact 36 movable with the piston. The arcing contacts shown as abutting could be replaced by sliding contacts, e.g. of the plug- and-socket type.
