Abstract
840,610. Arc-rupturing in switches. ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 26, 1958 [Aug. 30, 1957], No. 27395/58. Class 38 (5). A circuit-breaker generally similar to that described in Specification 689,227 has an arc chute 15 whose arc runners 20, 19 are partially enclosed by the inner walls 30, 31 of chimneys 25. 26. These walls have apertures 32 through which the arcing products generated by the arc terminal on surface 33 are immediately expelled. In a modification, the runners decrease in. width and diverge from one another in the direction of arc travel,. the walls increasing in width in that direction, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). The circuit-breaker shown in Figs. 5 and 6 has its arc runners 57, 58 enclosed by insulating tubes 67, apertured at 70 and connected by a hollow insulating bridge to provide a path for the arc drawn between the stationary arcing contacts 49, 50. The arcing chamber so formed is enclosed by insulating tubes 53, 54, to provide interconnected flues 63, and by a magnetic blow-out tube 62. In operation the arc formed between the contacts 49, 50, travels up the passageway 56 and the metallic vapours pro. duced at its terminals are expelled through apertures 70 into the flues 63.
