739,735. Arc-rupturing in switches. SIEMENS - SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT. - GES. Aug. 17, 1953 [Aug. 16, 1952; Sept. 8, 1952; Feb. 27, 1953], No. 22624/53. Class 38 (5). An arc chute has the walls 3, 4 parallel to the opening path of contacts 1, 2 provided with metal surfaces 5, 6 so that the arc on impinging on the surfaces is split and extinguished. Alternatively, the whole chute may be of metal, preferably iron, so that the arc induces a strong magnetic field in the walls, slots 8 for the escaping gases being provided (Fig. 3). In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), guide surfaces are pressed out from two opposing walls of the chute or are provided by additional metal sections (Fig. 6, not shown), while in yet another embodiment (Fig. 7) guide surfaces 13 ... 16 additional to guide surfaces 9 are provided, arcing horns 11, 12 extending from the contacts in all these embodiments. If an insulating chute is used, e.g. of plastic, it may be surrounded by a mass of mica flakes, and all-metal chutes may be coated with cadmium to assist in quenching the arc.
