Abstract

987,869. Gas-blast switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 4, 1961 [Aug. 8, 1960], No. 28387/61. Heading H2B. In a gas-blast switch, such as that of Specification 842,986, the main contacts 16 are shunted by separable auxiliary contacts 73, 76, 78 in series with impedances 70, each set of auxiliary contacts including a contact 76 forming an exhaust member and containing an arcing electrode 80. This electrode is connected to the contact 76 and is dimensioned so as to limit the velocity of the flow of gas along the auxiliary arc to a subsonic velocity. This is stated to prevent excessive " chopping " when interrupting light currents. In the arrangement shown the movable auxiliary contacts 78 are carried by an insulating cross-bar 81 and are opened after the main contacts open.
