Abstract

974,156. Air break switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Feb. 25, 1963 [April 6, 1962], No. 7504/63. Heading H2B. A load interrupting switch comprises a main blade contact 14 and main fixed contact 13, a resistor 18A connected at one end with the fixed contact 13 and an auxiliary switch blade 31 connected to the other end of the resistor and engageable with the main blade 14 in the closed position of the switch and during the initial stage of the opening movement. When the main contacts separate a parallel circuit still remains through the main blade, the auxiliary blade and the resistor section 18A thus preventing arcing at the main contacts. The auxiliary blade remains in contact with the arcing contact 15 of the main blade, as the latter pivots upwards, until it is arrested by a stop 23 when the two blades are separated to establish an arc between them. During further movement of the main blade 14 the arc is successively transferred to arcing contacts 24, 26 respectively inserting further resistor sections 18B, 18C in series with the arc. A corona shield 22 surrounds the auxiliary blade 31 in its open position.
