Abstract
1,254,480. High voltage switches. S. & C. ELECTRIC CO. 12 Nov., 1969 [27 Nov., 1968], No. 55396/69. Heading H1N. A high-voltage isolating switch of the kind having an insulator 14 rotatable about a longitudinal axis and a contact blade 28 carried by and movable with the insulator 14 between open and closed positions, has a resistor 61 in series therewith and normally shorted out by auxiliary contacts 69, 73; 71, 74, the auxiliary contacts being opened to insert the resistor in circuit only while the isolating switch is being closed, so as to limit the inrush current. The isolating switch may be of centre break type as described in Specification 1,091,643 and be associated with a series interrupter 34. By linkages 41 the operation of the interrupter is linked with that of the isolating switch such that on initial rotation of the insulators 13, 14 to open the circuit the interrupter contacts 35 first separate, followed by the isolating contacts 44, whereupon the interrupter contacts are reclosed. During this movement the auxiliary contacts 69-74 remain closed. Upon initial movement of the insulators 13, 14 to reclose the circuit a device in the housing 76 (Figs. 4, 5, not shown) releases a latch allowing a charged spring to open the auxiliary contacts. After this the isolating contacts 44 re-engage. Further rotation of the insulators 13, 14 moves the auxiliary contacts back to closed position recharging and relatching the spring.
