Abstract

1,156,919. Arcing preventing in switches; vacuum switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 1 Dec., 1966 [23 Dec., 1965], No. 54560/65. Heading H1N. A normally closed vacuum switch 7 in series with a normally open auxiliary switch 10, 11 are connected across the main contacts 2, 3 of an on load isolating switch. The auxiliary contacts 10, 11 are closed immediately before the main contacts separate, by means of a link 17, and the vacuum switch is opened, after contacts 2, 3 have separated, by an eccentric 6 on shaft 4 carrying the main contact blade 3. Subsequently the auxiliary contacts 10, 11 are opened and the main blade 3 is moved further to introduce an isolating gap and to engage with an earth contact 20. The vacuum switch is mounted upon a pivot 8 and supported by a compression spring 9 to allow for the sideway movement of the eccentric. The operations are reversed during closing. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) provision is made to close the main contacts first.
